The grooves on the tops of teeth can be quite deep and retain food particles which can lead to decay.  In fact, about 60% of cavities in children’s teeth occur in the grooves rather than between or on the sides of teeth.  A proactive sealant treatment is the thoroughly clean the biting surface of a tooth before it gets a cavity and seal the tooth with a resin material which is bonded to the tooth.  Although sealants do wear naturally and may become damaged over time, they have the potential to remain effective for five years or longer, despite the heavy pressures endured by teeth during chewing each day.
